The Talking About series was co-authored by the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) and the Movement Advancement Project (MAP), in partnership with a board of contributing editors from the Human Rights Campaign, Lake Research Partners, PFLAG’s Straight for Equality project, Arizona Together, researcher Margaret Conway, and Servicemembers Legal Defense Network (SLDN, on the Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell section). Fighting To Serve His Country

Victor Fehrenbach was an 18-year veteran of the Air Force, and an F-15 fighter pilot.  He still would be, but the Air Force fired him under the Pentagon’s “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy on gays because he revealed he was gay.  Lt. Col. Victor Fehrenbach, a pilot assigned to Mountain Home Air Force Base, Idaho, appeared on The Rachel Maddow Show on MSNBC, where he called an investigation board’s finding that his homosexuality harmed unit morale, good order and discipline “absolutely false.” Read more

Duluth, MN to offer domestic partner certificates

gay_marriage-thumbnail-125x94The city of Duluth will soon begin permitting couples to register as domestic partners, which could make it easier for them to get domestic partner benefits.  The ordinance says domestic partners are defined as those who are “as committed to one another as married persons are traditionally committed.”

Councilor Jeff Anderson proposed that the city offer the certificates, saying it would be easier for couples to get benefits from employers that provide them to domestic partners.  Anderson says his ordinance will make the Read more

Think Before You Speak Campaign

thinkb4youspeak_glsen_125x104_gifAlmost 90% of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) students report being verbally harassed at school because of their sexual orientation. LGBT teens experience homophobic remarks and harassment throughout the school day, creating an atmosphere where they feel disrespected, unwanted and unsafe.

Homophobic remarks such as “that’s so gay” are the most commonly heard; these slurs are often unintentional and a common part of teens’ vernacular. Most do not recognize the consequences, but the casual use of this language often carries over into more overt harassment.

Help pass hate crimes legislation once and for all!

A law protecting all of our citizens against senseless hate violence is long overdue. Two years ago, right-wing groups and George W. Bush’s veto threat blocked the Matthew Shepard Act, which would outlaw hate crimes based on both sexual orientation and gender identity. But now the bill is back. Read more
